Laughing Whale Coffee

"Make it true..... make it beautiful..... make it sing."
advice from Annie Dillard to would-be poets - but it works for coffee roasters too.

EcoRoaster
Laughing Whale Coffee is inspired by quality, playfulness, and fairness. There's a rich landscape of tastes and nuances to be coaxed from a good green coffee by careful roasting and blending. Our coffees are produced using a combination of the best traditional techniques and the latest low-emission, heat-recycling roasting technology.

The enjoyment to be had from a great cup of coffee is not to be underestimated. Shared with others it invites conversation, collaboration and community. As we say in the Maritimes, whether you're sitting back or gearing up to go, with a cup of our coffee in hand, "You're laughing."

Whale's tale
The story of Laughing Whale Coffee dates back to when Steve, our roaster, was travelling around Europe during his university years. He fell in love with the artisanally roasted and brewed espresso that he encountered in every small town café.

Returning to his then home of Washington state, he wanted to learn everything he could about coffee. When the first Starbucks opened just around the corner from his Seattle apartment, he found himself in a frontrow seat for the renaissance of the small, independent coffee roasting movement.

Today, Steve and his partner, Deborah, operate Laughing Whale Coffee Roasters in the UNESCO heritage village of Lunenburg Nova Scotia.

This community of shipbuilders, artists, fishermen and tradespeople have a legacy of pride in detailed craftsmanship and community values. All this dovetails well with Laughing Whale's passion for providing small-batch, carefully roasted and artfully blended coffees (all certified Fair Trade and organic - of course!) to customers near and far.

The combination of the finest of traditional practices with the latest in roasting technology provides the platform to create truly exceptional coffee.

The company name, “Laughing Whale”, is a nod to the legendary Maritime sense of humour and playfulness that makes this place what it is - one of a kind.

Coffee Growers and Sustainability
Our delicious coffees don’t rely just on the elements for nurturance, however. Without dedicated farmers, there would be no crop. Because sustainability is a cornerstone of our business practice at each step of production, we buy only certified Fair Trade and organic beans.

Fair Trade certification assures that each farmer in small cooperatives in Africa, Indonesia, and Central and South America earn a living wage growing and harvesting our coffee.

Most of our beans are purchased through a group of community based roasters in North America who support equitable and sustainable trade relationships. We also specifically support women coffee farmers through our Café Femenino offerings.
