University of Ottawa

In the winter of 2014, the University of Ottawa was designated Canada’s seventh Fair Trade Campus. Thanks to the hard work of various student groups and Food Services, the University has transformed the campus to demonstrate its commitment to social and environmental justice issues.

Fair trade means paying those who harvest and manufacture goods a fair wage and price for their products. No one is underpaid; everyone’s a winner. More than that, fair trade business creates long-term, meaningful trading relationships with producers in developing countries.

To achieve this designation, all non-franchised food stores and restaurants on campus now serve Fairtrade certified coffee, tea and chocolate. They are also required to create signage to promote the benefits of purchasing fair trade products.
