College de l'Assomption Named Canada’s 8th Fair Trade School!
June 13, 2016 | L'Assomption, Quebec. Celebrations were held, a certificate was awarded, recognizing the school’s efforts to promote fair trade. The school has had a World Shop since 2009, with the support of Oxfam-Québec. Over the years, more than 250 students have been involved in this project. The store is run by the students throughout the year. The students also take the shop on the road, as they participate in the Christmas Market, which lasts a month. The aim is to educate students and faculty about fair trade.
"The world shop is a place to sell products, but also create awareness of fair trade and the building of a better world. It is a wonderful student initiative, that many students get involved with it and learn from it. It is indeed the case for me, I had the chance to make a difference in the world, in my province, in my city, and in my college". Raphael Méthot, human resources manager at CA World shop and leader of the Fair Trade School project.
Each year, students participate in the World March of Oxfam-Québec. In 2015 they were at the 3rd National Fair Trade Conference in Montreal, and in 2016 they attended the 4th National Fair Trade Conference, in Winnipeg. Some students even had the chance to go to CBC Manitoba to discuss the World shops and the importance of fair trade.
"Seeing the many initiatives in support of fair trade, through things like the conference, has provided the push needed for our students to go ahead and complete the application. We are proud of the students, for their student engagement and willingness to make a difference in the world. "Annie Moreau, Director of Educational Services.
"For 7 years, College de l'Assomption students have been active with their World shop and other dynamic outreach events on fair trade. The entire team of Oxfam-Québec joins me in congratulating them for this great achievement! "Jennifer Robillard, mobilization Officer - Events and Magasin du Monde, Oxfam-Québec.
