Hudson Becomes Canada’s 21st Fair Trade Designated Town!

May 19, 2015 | Hudson, Quebec. The town of Hudson has been officially designated Canada’s 21st Fair Trade Town. The announcement was made at a ceremony outside City Hall on Tuesday May 19, 2015. A certificate was presented to Mayor Ed Prevost, which had this to say: “As Mayor of Hudson, I am proud of the initiative of local residents and community organizations in this very positive step that promotes awareness of the importance for all of us to take part in creating a fair and sustainable world.

Member of Parliament for Vaudreuil-Soulanges, Jamie Nicholls, who was also in attendance, shared his thoughts: "I am so proud to celebrate our town of Hudson as a fair trade town,” said Nicholls. “The fair trade movement reflects values that I would like to see Canada embrace when negotiating trade deals in places like Honduras and Panama"

Lisa Zentner from Fairtrade Canada, and Éric St-Pierre, Co-President of the Association québécoise du commerce équitable were also there alongside Fair Trade Hudson Committee members: Robert McKinnon, Mark Smith, Deborah Woodhead (Town councillor), Gwen Giberson, India Robbins, Laura McCaffrey and Jean Paul Vialard.

Our journey to Fair Trade Town status was possible by this amazing team of dedicated committee members and the genuine collaboration from all corners of our community who came together to support socially conscious decisions and take responsible action to help ensure equitable rights for all, said Robert McKinnon, member of the Fair Trade Hudson team.

“We’re inspired by the hard work, passion and enthusiasm of everyone involved in making Hudson a Fair Trade Town. Thanks in part to their efforts, the movement in Canada is growing stronger and gives Fairtrade producers access to fair and sustainable trade deals.” says Hugues Tshibemba, a/Executive Director, Fairtrade Canada.

"Witnessing the commitment of the people of Hudson for fair trade is a true inspiration, this fair trade town designation is a testimony of great work at the local level" Éric St-Pierre, co-président of the Association Québécoise du commerce équitable.

“Hudson’s campaign to become a Fair Trade Town was one of the most spirted to date, thanks to  incredible leadership, a very supportive community and a good deal of hard work. It is an honour to have worked with Hudson in there becoming a Fair Trade Town. I personally look forward to continuing to work with the Hudson team for years to come!” Sean McHugh, Executive Director, Canadian Fair Trade Network.

Hudson becomes Canada’s 21st Designated Fair Trade Town, joining hundreds of others from around the world.
