Pensionnat du Saint-Nom-de-Marie Named Canada’s 11th Fair Trade School!

October 12, 2016 | Montreal, Quebec. Pensionnat du Saint-Nom-de-Marie has become Quebec’s 6th Fair Trade designated School! They are joining a growing number of Canadian schools who are driving a powerful global movement for change by demonstrating a strong commitment to fair trade among its administrators, teachers, and students.

At its core, the Fair Trade School Program is about educating Canada’s young leaders of tomorrow to understand the connection between our food supply and the people that grow our food on a daily basis. The Pensionnat du Saint-Nom-de-Marie has been doing just that through a maintained World Shop for the last 5 years with support from Oxfam-Quebec. Over the years, close to one hundred students have been involved in the project. The World Shop has been active around the school and has promoted fair trade products during special events and holidays such as back to school celebrations, parent-teacher events, Halloween, and Saint-Valentine’s day.

The goal of the World Shop was to encourage the consumption of fair products and to motivate others to adopt long-term responsible practices. Sophie, the World Shop chair, proudly holds the Fair Trade School certificate along with other students, teachers and members of management involved in the project.

"For over five years now, Pensionnat du Saint-Nom-de-Marie has been very active reaching out to both students, teachers and staff, in addition to selling many fair trade products in their World shop! Congratulations to the entire committee on becoming a designated Fair Trade School"- Eric St-Pierre, Association Québécoise du Commerce Équitable.

“Congratulations Pensionnat du Saint-Nom-de-Marie on becoming a Fair Trade Designated School! You’re joining a growing movement across Canada, and around the world” – Sean McHugh, Executive Director, Canadian Fair Trade Network.

Thank you for supporting the shift to a more just and sustainable world! "- Melissa Dube, Community Relations Manager, Fairtrade Canada
